North Texas woman opens healthy, organic dessert cafe

In a decision that might have saved her daughter’s life, Dorothy Warda turned to nothing.

As in no preservatives and a 100{0801214e78975eb3a9cfdb5d4357df453af07659a404687858f2b1886ffc3159} organic diet. Warda in turn was inspired to open DessertsRX cafe in Colleyville, which serves organic delights to its customers.

At age 5, her daughter Nina’s blood vessels started to break and she developed many different rashes, Dorothy said.

“We went from one doctor to another; some suggested it may be cancer — leukemia — others suspected hemophilia, and I was being sent from one oncology clinic to another just to rule out another theory,” she said. “I was terrified all that time, looking for answers and got none.

“I saw many children undergoing chemo at those clinics and it was just heartbreaking.”

Dorothy started looking for answers on the internet when she came across information about eating right and proper nutrition. She did not know about GMOs, artificial food dyes, additives, etc., but she decided to try something entirely different from what they’d been used to eating.

“I decided to change her diet to 100{0801214e78975eb3a9cfdb5d4357df453af07659a404687858f2b1886ffc3159} organic, and all her symptoms went away within just a couple of weeks. That changed my life,” she said. “I was outraged that the foods I thought were safe were making my daughter sick.”

As Nina, now 16, was growing up, Dorothy kept making all of her food at home. She put her real estate career aside for a while and started studying nutrition online (she has since returned to selling real estate in addition to the cafe).

She also got her children, including Nina, to take several courses to learn how to regularly eat healthy. Now, her entire family is certified as health coaches, plant-based and raw food chefs.

“Since we discovered the root cause of my health issues and switched to organic food I have never felt better,” Nina said. “All my symptoms, rashes and feeling sick disappeared.”

Dorothy turned that experience into a dream with the opening of DessertsRX in December. Of course, that was followed shortly after by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while that has created the same challenge for her cafe as many other food establishments, Dorothy believes that now, more than ever, people need to eat healthy food such as hers.

“DessertsRx has been designed with the customer’s well-being in mind. We are a one-of-a-kind, unique establishment,” she said. “All of our products are hand-crafted on premises, made from scratch from all organic, non-GMO ingredients, based on solid nutrition knowledge and skill set to support a healthy lifestyle.

“Our desserts are not just desserts. They only look and taste like it, but in reality due to their nutritional profile they can be eaten as a healthy and nutritious anytime snack, breakfast or even meal replacement.”

The most popular desserts are the noCheeseCake Jars. These are small jars of what resembles a mousse/cheesecake filling, but in fact, contain healthy alternatives — with a taste that will rival the less healthy alternative.

“Another important aspect is that we do not use any artificial food dyes, only organic super foods to color our desserts,” she said.

Dorothy said expansion is in the works. Soon they will be opening their flagship organic coffee house at 62 Main Street, Suite 100 in Colleyville, where they will be roasting their own organic coffee, along with other healthy snacks and foods.
